Dressing up and revealing all: erotic performance on film

“I engage with voyeurism in public space,” writes Julie Cook, “and consider constructed power relationships between performer and consumer.” In the books Baby Oil and Ice and Olympia Moments, the performers in question are London’s strippers, whom Cook thoughtfully photographs alongside the various spaces in which their art comes to life.

With Beauties of Today, meanwhile, it is the stars of neo burlesque that Cook celebrates, inspired by the cigarette cards of a bygone age. “The photography…looks at the physical and psychological pleasure of contrived gesture and expression,” she writes.
